Highlighting a novel approach to rural sanitation, Olympic medallist P. V. Sindhu has lauded Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan for introducing “Magic Drains,” describing them as a transformative solution to long-standing wastewater challenges in villages.

In a video message reviewing the Deputy Chief Minister’s governance initiatives over the past 20 months, Sindhu said the concept reflects innovative thinking aimed at solving grassroots problems. She noted that sanitation remains a critical issue in rural India, where the absence of proper drainage systems often forces communities to live in unhygienic conditions.

According to her, the “Magic Drains” system, conceived under Pawan Kalyan’s leadership, offers a practical and cost-effective alternative to conventional infrastructure. Unlike traditional cement drains, these systems are designed with soak pits and a three-layer filtration bed that allows wastewater from households to be absorbed and filtered within seconds. The treated water is then recharged into the groundwater system, addressing both sanitation and water sustainability concerns.

Experts say such decentralised wastewater management systems can significantly reduce stagnant water, foul odour, and the spread of vector-borne diseases in rural areas. Sindhu emphasised that beyond improving sanitation, the initiative contributes to better public health outcomes and enhances the quality of life in villages.

A key advantage of the system is its cost efficiency. Compared to standard cement drainage infrastructure, the Magic Drains reportedly reduce construction costs by nearly 80%, making them scalable across rural habitations without imposing heavy financial burdens on the state.

Sindhu expressed optimism that such forward-looking initiatives would accelerate Andhra Pradesh’s rural development. She also voiced hope that under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, with support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and guided by Pawan Kalyan’s vision, the state would continue to implement innovative programmes for holistic growth.
