The long-pending reconstruction of the Rama Temple Akividu, which had been at the centre of local disputes, formally commenced on Sunday with the laying of the foundation stone under heavy police security.
The ceremony was attended by Andhra Pradesh Assembly Deputy Speaker and Undi MLA Raghu Rama Krishna Raju, along with his spouse, in the presence of thousands of devotees. The bhumi puja was conducted at the auspicious time of 7:14 am, following traditional Vedic rituals.
Addressing the gathering, Raghu Rama Krishna Raju said that despite attempts by certain groups to stall the temple’s reconstruction through legal intervention, the project would move forward without compromise. He asserted that the temple would be constructed using Krishna Shila m and designed to endure for centuries, estimating its structural longevity at around 800 years.
The Deputy Speaker also expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to making the event possible, conveying his thanks through social media.
The temple issue had previously sparked tensions during the Sri Rama Navami celebrations, when clashes broke out between two groups over the reconstruction plans. The matter subsequently reached the High Court, which advised that construction should proceed only with due government permissions.
In view of the sensitive background, authorities deployed a large police contingent to prevent any untoward incidents. Officials said the situation remained peaceful during the ceremony, with security arrangements ensuring smooth conduct of the event.
The commencement of construction marks a significant development in a long-standing local issue, with the administration aiming to balance religious aspirations and law-and-order considerations.
