On World Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Day observed on May 19, gastroenterology experts from Medicover Hospitals, Hitec City stressed urgent need for early diagnosis, public awareness and timely access to specialised care for patients. This year’s theme, “IBD Has No Borders – Access to IBD Care,” highlights ensuring treatment reaches all patients regardless of geography or economic barriers.

Dr. Arun Arora, Consultant Gastroenterologist, Hepatologist and Interventional Endoscopist, said Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease are rising in India, especially among urban populations and people aged 20–40. He noted increasing cases due to changing diets, sedentary lifestyles, stress, pollution, excessive antibiotics and altered gut microbiome. India may have 1.4–1.6 million people affected, with Ulcerative Colitis more common than Crohn’s, and men slightly more affected.

Doctors warned delayed diagnosis occurs as symptoms are mistaken for infections, acidity or IBS. Key signs include persistent diarrhoea, abdominal pain, blood in stool, weight loss, fatigue, anaemia and urgency. If untreated, IBD may cause bleeding, obstruction, malnutrition, fistulas, dehydration and higher colorectal cancer risk. However, biologics, immunotherapy, precision diagnostics, minimally invasive care and nutrition support help patients live active lives.

Experts stressed lifestyle measures like balanced diet, hygiene, reduced processed food, no smoking or alcohol, stress control, sleep and regular follow-ups for better long-term outcomes and complication prevention overall health.
