The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has been tasked with preparing city lakes for the upcoming Sankranti kite festival, scheduled from January 13 to 15, 2026. HYDRA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath inspected development works at key lakes, including Tammidikunta and Nallacheruvu in Kukatpally, and stressed that these water bodies should be developed into safe and tourist-friendly venues for the festival.

The Commissioner directed that only treated water from Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) should enter the lakes to prevent contamination. He also emphasized maintaining cleanliness, enhancing greenery, and developing parks along the lake shores. Facilities for the elderly, shaded seating, and children’s play areas must be provided to make the lakes accessible and enjoyable for all age groups.

Ranganath highlighted the importance of close coordination among GHMC, tourism authorities, and other government departments to ensure smooth festival arrangements. He instructed authorities to prioritize safety measures, drinking water, toilets, and sufficient parking for visitors. Measures to control dust during ongoing restoration work were also emphasized, along with the immediate filling of lakes with clean water post-monsoon. Inlets, outlets, and channels are to be developed to allow rainwater from surrounding areas to enter the lakes efficiently.

HYDRA’s restoration efforts have transformed the lakes into vibrant venues for public celebrations. Along with Tammidikunta and Nallacheruvu, Bathukamma festivities are already hosted at Amberpet and Madhapur lakes. Restoration of six HYDRA-managed lakes has increased their total area from 105 acres to 180 acres, reclaiming 75 acres of encroached land. Residents have welcomed the changes, noting that once-neglected lakes are now ready to host festivals and recreational activities.
