The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the Special Leave Petitions (SLPs) submitted by the Telangana government concerning the phone tapping controversy, thereby offering substantial relief to BRS MLA and former minister T. Harish Rao. A Bench led by Justice BV Nagarathna declined to intervene in the prior ruling of the Telangana High Court, which annulled the FIR filed against Harish Rao and former DCP Radhakishan Rao, emphasizing that there were no grounds to revisit the case.
The case originated from a complaint lodged in 2024 by Chakradhar Goud, a real estate entrepreneur from Siddipet, alleging unlawful phone tapping during the tenure of the BRS government. An FIR was subsequently filed. Harish Rao sought relief from the High Court to have the FIR quashed. On March 20 of the previous year, the court determined that there was insufficient evidence connecting him to the alleged offense.
The complainant later challenged the High Court's decision at the Supreme Court, but that challenge was also dismissed. Nonetheless, the Telangana government approached the Supreme Court again on June 18, asserting that the investigation was ongoing and that Harish Rao should be interrogated. Senior advocate Siddharth Luthra represented the State during these proceedings.
The Supreme Court has rejected this assertion, reiterating the High Court's finding that Harish Rao bore no involvement in the alleged phone tapping. The Bench remarked that it could not overturn a well-founded High Court ruling in the absence of new evidence.
