The GI application for Siddipet Batik Paintings has been filed by Subhajit Saha, a noted GI practitioner popularly known as the “GI Man of Telangana.” The filing was supported by the Commissioner of Industries, Government of Telangana, and officially represented by the Siddipet Batik Paintings Society, with Yasala Prakash as the authorized representative. The primary production area is Bharath Nagar in Siddipet (Urban) Mandal, where skilled artisans continue the craft through traditional techniques.
Siddipet Batik is a regional evolution of the ancient wax-resist dyeing technique known as Batik, which has historical roots in India. The term “Batik” originates from the Javanese words amba (to write) and tik (a drop), but Siddipet Batik has its own distinct identity shaped by local culture, materials, and artistic vision. The craft is closely associated with the late Yasala Balaiah (1939–2020), a National Award-winning artist who brought bright colours and rural Telangana themes into his creations.
Siddipet Batik Paintings, a unique and culturally vibrant textile art form from Telangana, are on the path to receiving Geographical Indication (GI) recognition, highlighting their artistic and regional significance. Known for intricate designs, eco-friendly dyes, and strong ties to local traditions, the craft is gaining wider appreciation as a symbol of Telangana’s rich heritage.
The defining feature of Siddipet Batik lies in its meticulous, labour-intensive process. Artisans apply honeybee wax using specially designed batik pens for intricate detailing. The natural crack patterns formed during dyeing make each piece unique. Using natural dyes from plants, minerals, and organic sources, the craft is sustainable and eco-friendly. It reflects rural life and traditions while providing livelihoods, especially empowering women.
