In a significant step to enhance the implementation of the Mahalakshmi free bus travel scheme, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) is expected to commence the issuance of smart cards to eligible women starting next month. This initiative aims to streamline free travel benefits while curbing misuse, such as the use of fake Aadhaar cards by women from other states.

The new smart cards, with three design prototypes prepared for government approval, will facilitate seamless ticket issuance and verification. Additionally, from March 1, 2026, TGSRTC will offer discounts on AC and luxury buses, aligning fares with express bus rates to make premium travel more affordable. TGSRTC Managing Director Nagireddy emphasized, "We are introducing smart cards soon to ensure efficient service. Furthermore, electric buses on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) will aid pollution control, with 2,000 new buses arriving under the PM e-Drive scheme."

The Mahalakshmi scheme, launched by the Congress government on December 9, 2023, has revolutionized women's mobility in Telangana by providing zero-fare rides on non-deluxe TSRTC buses, including Palle Velugu and Express services. It extends to girls, women, and transgender persons of all ages domiciled in the state, with no specific eligibility criteria beyond residency—beneficiaries simply need to present an Aadhaar card for a zero ticket. As part of a broader empowerment program, the scheme also includes monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,500 to women heads of below-poverty-line families and subsidized LPG cylinders at Rs 500.

Since its inception, the program has delivered remarkable impact. In the first four months alone, it saved women Rs 1,177 crore, with daily ridership surging from 14 lakh to an average of 29.67 lakh women commuters. By July 2025, over 200 crore free rides had been recorded, resulting in collective savings exceeding Rs 6,700 crore and boosting bus occupancy to 62% women passengers. This has not only alleviated financial burdens but also promoted gender equality, enabling better access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities.
