Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar has issued a stern warning to social media influencers involved in misleading the public through ‘lucky draw’ schemes. Leveraging their popularity on platforms like Instagram and reels, some influencers are allegedly promising cars, expensive bikes, houses, and DJ sets to lure people into paying money, only to cheat them.
Speaking on X (formerly Twitter), Sajjanar highlighted that this trend follows the crackdown on illegal betting apps, with some individuals shifting to these so-called lucky draws to continue exploiting the public. He shared videos of several influencers promoting flashy campaigns on reels while carrying out fraudulent activities in reality.
The police commissioner made it clear that anyone found engaging in such scams will face strict action under the Prize Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act of 1978. He emphasized that the law applies equally to celebrities, social media stars, and ordinary individuals, and no one will be exempt from legal consequences.
Sajjanar urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any instances of lucky draw fraud immediately. Information can be shared via Dial 100 or the Hyderabad City Police WhatsApp number 94906 16555. Complaints can also be made to local police stations. The commissioner cautioned the public not to fall for enticing offers or flashy promotions and to avoid giving money to such schemes. He reiterated that social media popularity is not a shield against the law and warned that fraudulent activities exploiting public trust will be dealt with decisively.
