A visit to Buddhavanam, Asia’s largest Buddhist heritage theme park at Nagarjunasagar, left South Asian ambassadors mesmerized by its grandeur and cultural richness. The park, developed by the Telangana government, showcases intricate Buddhist structures, sculptures, and serene landscapes that reflect the legacy of Acharya Nagarjuna and the flourishing Buddhist culture of the region.
The delegation included Muzaffar Shabin Musthafa, High Commissioner of Malaysia; Dr. Sankar Prasad Sarma, Ambassador of Nepal; Major General Vetsot Namgyel, Ambassador of Bhutan; Mahishini Collini, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka; and Chavanart Thangsumphamt, Ambassador of Thailand. They were accompanied by Ruchi Singh and Rahul Elavarthy from India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
The guests were welcomed at the entrance plaza with traditional Dappu and Kolatam dance performances, creating a lively cultural atmosphere. Mallepalli Laxmaiah, Special Officer of the Buddhavanam Project, along with Dr. E. Sivanagireddy, Buddhist expert and CEO of Pleach India Foundation, guided the delegation through the park. They explored Buddhacharithavanam, the statue of Acharya Nagarjuna in the Maha Stupa, and other intricately designed sections, learning about the historical and cultural significance of each structure.
Laxmaiah also presented videos detailing the park’s development and plans to make it a world-class Buddhist tourist destination. The ambassadors enjoyed a tranquil boat ride on the park’s reservoir, taking in the serene surroundings and architectural marvels.
After the visit, the delegation proceeded to Future City to participate in the Telangana Rising Global Summit. The trip left a lasting impression, highlighting Buddhavanam as a cultural landmark and a bridge connecting South Asian nations through shared heritage.
