Swachha Andhra Corporation Chairman Kommareddy Pattabhiram and his team have been touring various states of the country and studying the policies being implemented in the cities there. As part of this, he visited Surat city in Gujarat. The team of Swacha Andhra members expressed satisfaction and happiness after seeing the policies being adopted for sanitation management there.
“The main reason why Surat city, which was once a cesspool of dirt due to lack of sanitation and also spread "plague" disease, has now transformed into a leading city in the country in terms of cleanliness is because of a Telugu IAS officer named Suryadevara Ramachandra Rao who worked as the Surat Municipal Commissioner”, Pattabhi said.
He mentioned that Ramachandra Rao worked hard to turn a city out of uncleanliness and become a clean city Pattabhiram said that it is a source of pride for all Telugu people.
He also said that many interesting things were observed during their visit. Along with solid waste management, liquid waste management is also being done very well in Surat city. Pattabhiram said that a total of 2,285 km of pipeline network is being set up and about 1076 MLD of drainage water coming from the city is being treated through 11 Sewerage Treatment Plants(STPs).
Pattabhiram said that the sewage water is being converted to drinking water by tertiary treatment for the second time. Pattabhiram said that about 30 percent of the drainage water coming from the city, i.e. 370 mld of water, is being supplied to the textile parks and industries in the surrounding areas.
Pattabhiram he and his team members had monitored the entire process of treating dirty water through these STP plants and tertiary plants. He added that he and some corporation members even drank the water. He mentioned that it was a great thing to turn sewage water into drinking water and supply the same water to industries.
