Proposed Solutions
Combine Corridors at JBS
Metro India News | Hyderabad
To address technical challenges in aligning Metro Rail corridors to Medchal and Shamirpet, Hyderabad Airport Metro Ltd (HAML) MD NVS Reddy, along with senior engineers and technical consultants, conducted an inspection on Sunday.
The steep curvature of the Paradise-Bowenpally road near the Begumpet airport boundary has necessitated adjustments in the alignment. Due to airport authorities’ requirements, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is planning a 600-meter tunnel below the Begumpet airport runway for its elevated corridor. However, accommodating a Metro corridor with double-elevated levels above the HMDA corridor poses significant engineering challenges.
To resolve this and create an integrated Metro hub at JBS, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy suggested combining the Paradise-Medchal and JBS-Shamirpet Metro corridors initially, later splitting them into separate lines. Keeping this in mind, NVS Reddy and his team inspected various roads in the Cantonment area, including JBS-Secunderabad Club Road, Staff Road, Mudfort Road, and Bowenpally routes, to identify the optimal alignment.
During the inspection, Reddy directed his team to evaluate all alternative alignments, avoiding steep curves, minimizing underground sections, and reducing private property acquisition. He emphasized aligning the Metro to serve maximum residential colonies and identifying government and defense lands near proposed stations for parking and passenger facilities.
The inspection revealed that combining both corridors at JBS would eliminate the need for tunneling below the airport, simplifying construction. The alignment could then follow the service road median near Bowenpally, connecting the Medchal corridor with the airport corridor, creating a seamless 60 km Metro link from Medchal to the airport.
For the JBS-Shamirpet corridor, an elevated structure over the HMDA's proposed Karimnagar Highway corridor was deemed feasible. Plans are also underway to develop JBS as a mega Metro hub, utilizing 30 acres of government and defense land to serve Secunderabad and northern Telangana. Senior officers, including Chief Project Manager B. Anand Mohan, participated in the inspection.
