The Summer Sun is practically baking the streets of Hyderabad, offering a golden opportunity for clean energy. Yet, thousands of optimistic residents and business owners are watching their investments evaporate. Despite sinking lakhs of rupees into shiny rooftop solar panels, a severe and baffling shortage of net meters has left these green energy powerhouses sitting completely idle. An administrative bottleneck stretching back nearly 100 days from December has prevented these ready to go plants from synchronizing with the state grid. High tech investments have essentially been reduced to expensive rooftop decorations.
A net meter is the absolute brain of any solar powered property, diligently recording the crucial readings of electricity sent to the grid versus the power consumed. Without this tiny piece of hardware, property owners cannot offset their soaring bills. The Telangana Solar Energy Association has brought the issue to the notice of the TGSPDCL leadership, spotlighting the continued non availability of net meters across various divisions. The association made it crystal clear that despite surging demand for rooftop solar installations from residential, commercial, and industrial consumers, member companies are hitting a massive brick wall.
Countless solar plants are fully installed and commissioned at consumer premises but remain entirely paralyzed, unable to be synchronized with the grid solely because net meters have not been provided.
This infrastructure paralysis is triggering a massive financial drain. Property owners who enthusiastically took out bank loans for systems ranging from 3 to 10 kW are now trapped paying monthly EMIs without seeing a single rupee drop from their electricity bills. The economic waste extends to the state level too. The delay forces the state to purchase expensive power from external exchanges at ₹5 to ₹10 per unit, while cheap, abundant local solar power goes completely untapped. Even darker allegations are surfacing. Local whispers and news reports suggest that while official stocks are mysteriously unavailable, meters miraculously appear for those willing to pay hefty service charges or bribes ranging from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 30,000.
A glimmer of hope
Refusing to stay in the dark, representatives from the association requested the new TGSPDCL CMD Jitesh Patil to expedite the procurement and supply of net meters, demanding their timely availability at the field level. They firmly requested that clear instructions be issued to all concerned offices to avoid further procedural delays. Following a crucial meeting, the newly appointed CMD provided a much needed sigh of relief, assuring the association that the meter shortage is being actively resolved and stocks should be available very soon.
According to Telangana Solar Energy Association President Burra Ashok Kumar Goud, the ongoing meter shortage has triggered four alarming consequences. Primarily, immediate financial losses are actively hurting both solar developers and eager consumers. Furthermore, the state faces a significant delay in achieving its ambitious renewable energy targets. This situation has also led to a devastating loss of consumer confidence regarding rooftop solar adoption. Finally, valuable solar assets remain entirely idle despite their absolute readiness for power generation.
With Telangana aiming for ambitious renewable energy targets under schemes like the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, the current meterless state is a significant hurdle. If the CMD assurances hold true, thousands of homes will finally flip the switch this week, providing much needed relief to the grid and the wallets of citizens.
