In a major recognition for India’s rich artisanal heritage and contemporary design innovation, Dr. Rambabu Muppidi—an artisan from Andhra Pradesh—has been awarded 12 design patents by the Indian Patent Office. Dr. Muppidi, who currently serves as a faculty member in Leather Goods and Accessories Design (LGAD) at FDDI Hyderabad, has transformed traditional craft narratives into modern, patent-worthy innovations.
A third-generation artisan from Jangareddygudem in West Godavari district, Dr. Muppidi hails from a family known for hand-painted film banners. His artistic journey began early, nurtured by a deep connection to local crafts and culture. He later pursued formal education in Fine Arts and Design and went on to complete a Ph.D. in Wooden Handicrafts History, earning a Gold Medal for his research contributions.
Over the past two decades, Dr. Muppidi has worked at the intersection of industry, academics, and grassroots innovation. His recent patents include eco-conscious designs such as a green coconut-inspired jewelry box, a leather-wood bird toy, and decorative tabletop accessories rooted in Kondapalli and Nirmal craft traditions. These designs are not only aesthetically rich but also demonstrate sustainable thinking and artisan collaboration.
“My work focuses on preserving the rich legacy of Indian crafts by blending traditional artistry with modern design and technology,” Dr. Muppidi told Metro India. “I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate closely with artisans from areas like Chudi Bazaar and Begum Bazaar. Through these partnerships, we’ve developed designs that respect heritage while embracing innovation. I’m dedicated to guiding and supporting students, researchers, and artisans who aspire to explore the world of design and patents.”
Dr. Muppidi’s cumulative patent portfolio includes 25 design patent applications filed within six months, 12 of which have already been granted. His innovations span handcrafted fashion accessories, designer utility bags, ergonomic footwear, and lifestyle products inspired by indigenous art forms like Kalamkari, Etikoppaka toys, and tribal motifs.
The patent filings have been facilitated by Resolute4IP, a Hyderabad-based IPR consulting firm. Subhajit Saha, Founder of R4IP and Head of Legal at the Resolute Group, praised the achievement: “Dr. Rambabu’s patents are a welcome example of how academia and traditional knowledge systems can come together. His work is already inspiring students and institutions to think about innovation through the lens of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs). In a knowledge-driven economy, IPRs will become a vital index of innovation.”
In addition to his design innovations, Dr. Muppidi has authored nine books, contributed to 40 chapters, and published over 80 peer-reviewed research papers. He has presented at more than 25 national and international conferences, with research spanning CAD/CAM design, jute innovations, and women-centric vocational training.
