Telangana Revenue, Housing and Information Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy has urged the Union Government to sanction at least three lakh houses for rural Telangana in the current financial year, citing a severe housing backlog in villages over the past 12 years.

During a meeting with Union Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Hyderabad on Saturday, the Minister submitted a formal representation highlighting the urgent need for rural housing support under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G).

Ponguleti stated that between 2014 and 2023, rural housing construction in Telangana was largely neglected and not a single house was secured from the Centre during that period. He emphasized that despite repeated appeals over the last two years, the State has not received a positive response from the Union Government regarding fresh allocations.

He noted that under the leadership of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, the State Government has prioritized housing for the poor and set an ambitious target to provide homes to all eligible beneficiaries within three years. This year alone, nearly four lakh houses have been sanctioned under the State’s Indiramma housing initiative. However, additional support from the Centre would significantly accelerate progress.

Telangana did not participate in PMAY-G 1.0 earlier. After the formation of the present government in 2023, the State formally joined PMAY-G 2.0 as per guidelines issued by the Ministry of Rural Development. Although the Union Cabinet approved PMAY-G 2.0 in August 2024 and allocated 1.19 crore houses to various states for 2024-25 and 2025-26 based on earlier data, Telangana had no pending 2018 data since it was not part of PMAY-G 1.0.

The State recently conducted an extensive door-to-door survey and identified 11.57 lakh eligible rural households through the Awaas+ 2024 mobile application process. Considering the accumulated demand, the Minister requested sanction of three lakh houses this year and two lakh more next year, expressing hope that the Centre would respond positively to help fulfil the dream of home ownership for Telangana’s poor families.
