TGSRTC buses to show real-time location on Google Maps soon

Passengers travelling on Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) buses will soon be able to track their bus location in real time directly on Google Maps. The new initiative aims to make public transport in the state more convenient, reliable, and predictable, allowing commuters to plan their journeys with greater accuracy.

Google has proposed integrating live bus movement data into its widely used Maps platform under the “Transit” feature. The state’s IT department has communicated this to TGSRTC Managing Director Y. Nagi Reddy, and a Google representative recently met the corporation’s officials to discuss technical details. TGSRTC has agreed to share the live GPS data of around 9,500 buses. As most buses are already equipped with GPS devices, this information will now be updated on Google Maps every 30 seconds.

Once implemented, passengers can open Google Maps, select the “Transit” option, and enter their starting point and destination. The app will show essential details such as the nearest bus stop, the time left for the next bus to arrive, the bus number, intermediate stops, total travel time, and even the expected arrival time of the following bus if one is missed.

The feature will first be launched for city services and later extended to district and inter-state routes. It will also help commuters see where a bus is currently located and how long it will take to reach their stop, offering real-time updates throughout the journey.

TGSRTC already offers a similar service through its “Gamyam” app, but technical issues and inconsistent updates have limited its reliability. Officials believe Google Maps integration will resolve these issues and deliver accurate and dependable travel information. The move is expected to transform public transport in Telangana, providing passengers with a seamless, informed, and stress-free travel experience.
