Ambedkar was held on at the Media Centre, Downtown Mall, Lakdikapool on Tuesday. The event was presided over by BC Samaj president Sangem Surya Rao. Retired IPS officer Dr. J. He noted that Ambedkar remained independent of dominant parties as they were not structured for social justice.

Recalling history, he said caste census data of 1921 and 1931 enabled Ambedkar to secure reservations for Scheduled Castes, later enshrined in the Constitution. He criticised the discontinuation of caste enumeration for Backward Classes after Independence.

He highlighted lack of representation among Scheduled Tribes such as Erukala, Yanadi, Chenchu and Nakkala; Scheduled Castes like Relli; and Backward Classes including Vaddera, Vadhrangi, Kammari, Kummari, Kamsali, Chakali, Mangali and Dudekula, besides Dalit Christians and Muslims.

Among those present were Yakub, Suryanarayana (Retd. DRO), Narayana (Retd. ACP), Chandrasekhar (Retd. Grameena Bank Manager), Ramanarsaiah, Achuth and Kavitha, along with leaders from BC, SC, ST and Muslim communities.
