State Agriculture, Marketing, Cooperation, Handlooms and Textiles Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao on Friday launched the three-day “Thread Pochampally” handloom exhibition organised under the Telangana Rising initiative, aimed at promoting the globally renowned Pochampally Ikat tradition and supporting handloom artisans.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister said the handloom sector has played a vital role in taking India’s rich culture and traditions to the global stage. He described Pochampally Ikat as one of Telangana’s most celebrated art forms and said the skills of local weavers have brought international recognition to the state. He stressed the importance of preserving the centuries-old weaving tradition and passing it on to future generations.

Tummala noted that the Geographical Indication (GI) tag awarded to Pochampally Ikat reflects the creativity and craftsmanship of the region’s artisans. He also highlighted Pochampally’s historical significance as a centre of the Bhoodan movement and called for greater efforts to expand global markets for Pochampally rumals and Ikat sarees.

The minister said the state government, under the leadership of A. Revanth Reddy, has spent more than Rs 1,400 crore over the past two-and-a-half years on handloom development and weavers’ welfare.

The exhibition, which will continue till June 7, is intended to strengthen the international identity of Pochampally handloom products and create new opportunities for artisans and cooperative societies.
