Peddapalli district authorities have cracked down on illegal brick kilns following serious allegations of bonded labour and exploitation of migrant workers. Acting on reports of labourers being confined and forced to work under inhuman conditions, the district administration ordered immediate action against two brick kilns operating in Raghavapur village of Peddapalli mandal.
The issue first came to light on February 14, when reports surfaced about workers being illegally detained at a brick kiln. The district administration responded swiftly. Even before this, a complaint had been lodged by the Labour Commissioner of Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh, prompting a joint inquiry by revenue, police and labour department officials.
During the investigation, officials found that migrant workers had been brought from other states and were being confined and made to work in violation of labour laws. The workers were reportedly denied basic facilities and were subjected to exploitation. Authorities rescued the affected labourers and shifted them to Peddapalli railway station on the same day, from where they were sent back to their native places.
Based on the inquiry report submitted by officials, District Collector Koya Sri Harsha ordered strict action against the two brick kilns operating under the names MSB Bricks and VBC Bricks in Raghavapur. Following these directions, the Peddapalli Tahsildar sealed the two units on Saturday. Revenue officials confirmed that the kilns were operating without proper permissions, mandatory certifications and basic infrastructure, in clear violation of regulations.
Officials made it clear that there would be no compromise when it comes to protecting labour rights. They warned that stringent action would be taken against any brick kiln found violating laws or exploiting workers.
The action has triggered panic among other brick kiln owners in the district. For several years, many units have allegedly been functioning without proper approvals. Migrant workers were reportedly being forced into bonded labour, paid meagre wages and denied minimum facilities. In some cases, labourers who resisted exploitation were allegedly assaulted, and there were reports of harassment of women workers.
Despite occasional complaints in the past, enforcement had remained weak. However, the recent decisive move by the district administration has sent a strong message. With the sealing of the two kilns, other illegal operators in Peddapalli district are now said to be on edge, fearing similar action.
