Alleging an “unholy alliance” among the Congress, BRS and AIMIM, Nizamabad MP Dharmapuri Arvind on Monday criticised the ruling Congress party for securing the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts in the Nizamabad Municipal Corporation with outside support.

“Today, I understood why BRS President K. Chandrashekhar Rao and working president K.T. Rama Rao are being protected by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy in the Kaleshwaram, Formula-E car race and other corruption cases,” Arvind remarked, reacting sharply to the developments in Nizamabad. He accused the Congress of forging an unethical coalition with AIMIM and elements of the BRS to keep the BJP out of power, despite it emerging as the single largest party.

The ruling Congress party secured the mayoral post with the support of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). Umarani was elected as Mayor, while Salma Tahseen assumed charge as Deputy Mayor following the swearing-in of corporators.

In the just concluded municipal elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 28 seats in the 60-member corporation, falling just three short of the 31 required to secure the mayoral position. The Congress won 17 seats, AIMIM secured 14, and the BRS managed one seat.

Arvind alleged that the Congress strategically mobilised support from AIMIM and facilitated the defection of the lone BRS corporator to tilt the balance. He further claimed that sections of the police administration, allegedly aligned with the ruling party, contributed to the BJP’s defeat.

Describing the outcome as a “moral victory” for the BJP, Arvind asserted that his party would work towards regaining control of the corporation before the end of the five-year term. He reiterated the BJP’s commitment to exposing what he termed a politically motivated alliance formed solely to counter the BJP in Nizamabad.
