Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot on Tuesday emphasized the critical role of universities in promoting innovation and entrepreneurship to address challenges in rural development, healthcare, education, environment, and digital inclusion.

Speaking at the inauguration of the two-day South Zone Vice Chancellors’ Conference–2026, jointly organised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and hosted by Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences (RUAS), he said India’s transition from a knowledge-based economy to an innovation-driven global power depends on universities becoming centres of entrepreneurship. The Governor highlighted the importance of exposing students to the latest knowledge and technologies so that they can enhance their skills, pursue self-employment, and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Referring to the conference theme, “Nurturing Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Higher Education Institutions,” the Governor stressed that higher education institutions should go beyond awarding degrees to become hubs of leadership, innovation, and nation-building. He lauded RUAS for its visionary academic environment, research initiatives, and strong industry linkages, which help students grow intellectually and professionally.

RUAS Vice Chancellor Dr. Kuldeep Kumar Raina noted active participation by over 120 Vice Chancellors in person and around 100 online. AIU President Prof. Vinay Kumar Pathak called for preparing students as innovators and entrepreneurs, while RUAS Registrar S. Ashok Rao thanked participants and stakeholders for ensuring a successful conference.

The valedictory session is scheduled for January 21, with senior academicians and policymakers attending.
