Minister for Irrigation and Civil Supplies Capt. N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Friday warned rice traders against illegal hoarding, black marketing and selling rice at exorbitant prices, stating that strict action would be taken against violators.

The Minister said the government was determined to control rising rice prices and protect consumers from an undue financial burden. Enforcement operations have been intensified across Telangana, with special focus on wholesale and retail markets in Hyderabad and neighbouring districts.

He reviewed the price-control measures following discussions between Civil Supplies Department officials, wholesalers, retailers and rice millers. Civil Supplies Commissioner Stephen Ravindra briefed the Minister on enforcement measures, while Director of Civil Supplies Shyam Prasad Lal and other senior officials attended the meeting.

Price control drive

The government is targeting a price of Rs 66 per kg for commonly consumed BPT rice. The price of RNR rice will be reviewed, taking into account variations in quality and production costs.

"The government will not tolerate profiteering at the expense of consumers. Enforcement operations will continue until the market stabilises," Uttam warned. Twelve cases have already been registered against rice traders for alleged irregularities, including illegal stockpiling and overpricing. Coordinated raids have been conducted by five departments — Civil Supplies, Police, GST, Legal Metrology and other enforcement authorities.

Inspections have covered major trading centres in Hyderabad, Rangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts, including Begum Bazaar, Nampally and Maharajgunj. Raids will continue across the State to detect violations and curb excessive pricing.

No shortage of rice

Assuring consumers that Telangana has adequate rice stocks, the Minister appealed to them not to panic or make unnecessary bulk purchases. He also urged ration beneficiaries to consume the fine rice supplied through fair price shops.
