Union Ministers G. Kishan Reddy and K. Rammohan Naidu held a joint media briefing in New Delhi, outlining significant progress on airport development projects in Telangana, particularly in Warangal and Adilabad.
Kishan Reddy announced that the Central Government has taken an important decision regarding the development of the Warangal airport, marking a major step toward enhancing regional connectivity. He also highlighted the long-standing demand for establishing an airport in Adilabad, where a defence airstrip already exists. The proposal was discussed in detail with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu, along with senior officials from the Defence and Civil Aviation ministries. Local representatives, including MP G. Nagesh and MLA Payal Shankar, as well as district officials, were also part of the discussions.
Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu described the meeting as “crucial” for advancing aviation infrastructure in Telangana. He noted that Hyderabad currently hosts the state’s only airport, and there has been a long-standing aspiration among people for more airports across different regions. In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of expanding aviation access, the Centre is prioritising the development of feasible airport projects.
He confirmed that groundwork for the Warangal airport is progressing, with plans to lay the foundation stone within the next three months. Regarding Adilabad, he said the Centre has received approval from the Defence Ministry to utilise approximately 360 acres of defence land for airport development. An additional 450 acres will be acquired by the state government, which has already responded positively.
Given the strategic importance of the Adilabad location and its relevance for Air Force training, it has been decided that the Defence Ministry will take the lead in constructing the airport. The Airports Authority of India will build a separate civil terminal to facilitate commercial operations.
A joint field survey, including the Obstacle Limitation Survey on April 17, will determine runway orientation. Following this, the master plan will be finalised and groundwork initiated.
The ministers emphasised that Adilabad holds strong potential to emerge as a commercial and tourism hub. They also confirmed that similar dual-use airport models exist across the country. Additional proposals from Telangana, including sites in Peddapalli, are under evaluation, while the Kothagudem proposal has been found unfeasible.
