Minister for Welfare Adluri Lakshman Kumar said a comprehensive scientific and technical assessment of the Kaleshwaram project was essential to establish its long-term safety and structural stability.
He said the structural problems reported at the Medigadda Barrage should not be viewed as an isolated issue, but as a matter concerning the safety, quality and accountability of the entire project, built with public money.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, Lakshman Kumar said the concerning results of concrete quality tests on the piers of Block 7 required detailed scrutiny by experts.
He recalled that tests on Piers 16 to 21 of Block 7, which suffered subsidence in 2023, reportedly showed adverse results in several piers. The results were 73.3 per cent in Pier 19, 65.5 per cent in Pier 18, 61.1 per cent in Pier 20, 50.5 per cent in Pier 17, 49.9 per cent in Pier 21 and 41.3 per cent in Pier 16.
“These figures cannot be dismissed as mere statistics. They concern critical structural components that support the barrage gates and require a comprehensive technical assessment,” he said.
The Minister said ultrasonic pulse velocity and rebound hammer tests were being conducted to assess concrete strength and uniformity and identify cracks, voids and other defects. Their findings must be analysed comprehensively, he added.
Lakshman Kumar said the government was not targeting the project out of political vendetta because it was built during the previous government. “The issue is why a project built with public money suffered damage, where responsibility lies and what measures are needed to prevent such incidents in future,” he said.
“Every aspect of the structure must be subjected to detailed technical scrutiny by experts.”
