Doctors at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), Dilsukhnagar, successfully treated a rare case of recurrent kidney stones caused by a parathyroid adenoma — a tumor in the neck that leads to excess calcium in the blood (hypercalcemia), resulting in repeated kidney stone formation.

A 29-year-old woman from Saroornagar, Hyderabad, presented with severe bilateral loin pain, vomiting, and urinary discomfort. She had a history of multiple kidney stone surgeries. On evaluation, doctors discovered multiple stones obstructing both kidneys. The stones were removed in a staged manner.

Further investigation revealed abnormally high calcium and parathyroid hormone levels. A parathyroid scan identified a tumor in the left parathyroid gland, which was surgically removed. The patient recovered well.

Dr. Subhash Chandra Bose Inturi, Consultant Urologist, explained, ‘Unless the underlying cause, like a parathyroid tumor, is addressed, patients may continue to suffer from recurrent stones. A metabolic evaluation is essential for those with repeated stone formation.’

Dr. Srinivasa Narayanam, Senior Consultant and HOD, emphasized that stone removal alone isn't enough — underlying causes must be identified, especially in children and those with bilateral or recurrent stones.”
