A 47-year-old man with neurofibromatosis and severe kyphoscoliosis experienced a life-threatening emergency at Medicover Hospitals in Hitec City. During a visit to pulmonologist Dr. Meghana Reddy, he suddenly collapsed in the outpatient area with severe breathlessness and critically low blood pressure. The emergency team immediately incubated him and began intensive care.
Imaging revealed a rare pseudoaneurysm in the right internal mammary artery (RIMA) and a massive hemothorax, collapsing his right lung. Interventional Radiologist Dr. Saiteja urgently performed super-selective embolization using coils and glue to control the internal bleeding. Despite stabilization, he developed complications including lung infection, collapse, and a second bleed.
Due to his fragile condition, surgery was ruled out. Instead, thrombolytic therapy with streptokinase was delivered through a chest tube, dissolving clots and restoring lung function. After six days in intensive care, the coordinated efforts of the pulmonology, critical care, and interventional radiology teams led to his full recovery. ‘Teamwork and swift action saved his life,’ said Dr. Meghana Reddy.
