Allegations of spurious toddy arise in Kamareddy district

Serious concerns are being raised over the alleged manufacture and sale of spurious toddy in Kamareddy district, with residents claiming that adulterated liquor mixed with chemicals is being sold as natural palm toddy. Consumers who unknowingly consume the adulterated drink are reportedly suffering from serious health complications, prompting calls for stricter enforcement by the Excise Department.

According to local allegations, some traders are producing artificial toddy by mixing chemicals, water, and other substances to closely resemble fresh toddy collected from palm and date trees. Critics claim that inadequate enforcement and limited inspections have allowed the illegal trade to flourish across the district. Sources allege that despite the presence of only a limited number of toddy-yielding trees in many parts of the district, large quantities of toddy are being sold every day.

Residents allege that traders dilute genuine toddy with water and chemicals, apart from using a variety of substances to imitate the taste and appearance of natural toddy before selling it in toddy compounds and retail outlets. Medical experts caution that certain chemicals allegedly used in adulteration, including chloral hydrate and other sedative substances, can severely affect the nervous system. Excessive consumption may lead to breathing difficulties, a sharp drop in blood pressure, loss of consciousness, coma, and in extreme cases, death.

Residents and public health advocates have urged the Excise Department to intensify inspections, identify those involved in the manufacture and sale of adulterated toddy, and take strict legal action to protect consumers from potentially life-threatening health risks.
