Andhra Pradesh has secured another major boost to its medical education infrastructure, with the National Medical Commission (NMC) approving 175 additional MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic year. The latest approvals include 100 MBBS seats for the newly established Government Medical College at Piduguralla and 75 additional seats for Government Siddhartha Medical College, Vijayawada, taking the state’s total increase this academic year to 275 seats. Announcing the development, Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav said the approvals reflect the coalition government’s sustained efforts to strengthen government medical education and expand opportunities for aspiring doctors.
The NMC has granted the first Letter of Permission (LoP) to the Government Medical College at Piduguralla, enabling the institution to admit its first batch of 100 MBBS students. Meanwhile, Government Siddhartha Medical College in Vijayawada has been permitted to increase its annual intake by 75 seats.
The minister attributed the achievement to the government’s focused efforts since assuming office. He said continuous reviews were undertaken to ensure that government medical colleges met NMC norms relating to infrastructure, faculty recruitment, teaching standards, hospital facilities and medical equipment. These systematic improvements, he said, have translated into successive approvals for seat expansion.
With the latest sanction, Andhra Pradesh has added 455 MBBS seats over the past three academic years. The annual increase includes 150 seats in 2024-25, 30 seats in 2025-26, and 275 seats in 2026-27, marking a significant expansion in the state’s government medical education capacity.
The government said the increased intake will provide greater access to affordable medical education for students while helping address the long-term demand for qualified healthcare professionals across Andhra Pradesh. Officials added that efforts will continue to further strengthen medical colleges and healthcare institutions in line with national standards.
