In a significant policy shift aimed at encouraging population growth, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday announced financial incentives for families having a third and fourth child. Under the proposed “Pillale Sampada” initiative, the government will provide Rs.30,000 for the third child and Rs.40,000 for the fourth child.
The Chief Minister made the announcement during his recent address at “Swachh Andhra–Swarna Andhra” programme in Srikakulam district’s Narasannapeta constituency.
Naidu said declining population growth rates were becoming a matter of concern and stressed that children should be viewed as an asset for the nation’s future. Referring to demographic challenges faced by several countries, he noted that shrinking populations and rising elderly populations were negatively affecting economies across the world.
“Earlier, governments focused on population control. But circumstances have changed now. We must treat population as national wealth and adopt a population management policy,” the Chief Minister said.
He stated that the state government would soon roll out a comprehensive policy framework aimed at encouraging higher birth rates and supporting families financially. The proposed incentives, he said, are part of broader efforts to address demographic imbalances and strengthen future workforce capacity.
Naidu also highlighted the government’s existing welfare initiatives for mothers and children. He said financial assistance of Rs.15,000 is already being provided under the “Talliki Vandanam” scheme. In addition, the government is strengthening Anganwadi centres to improve nutritional support for mothers and children.
The Chief Minister emphasized that Andhra Pradesh’s long-term development depends on maintaining a healthy demographic balance and ensuring better care for future generations. The proposed policy is expected to generate wider debate on population trends and social welfare planning in the state.
