The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) is set to significantly accelerate its transition to green mobility, with the state government approving the procurement of 1,450 additional electric buses. The move forms a key part of Andhra Pradesh’s Sustainable Electric Mobility Policy (4.0), under which the government aims to gradually replace the corporation’s existing fleet of 8,375 diesel buses with electric buses by 2031.

This latest proposal comes alongside the Centre’s support under the PM-eBus Sewa initiative, through which Andhra Pradesh has already been allocated 1,050 electric buses. Of these, 750 buses are earmarked for operations across 11 cities, while 300 buses are designated for the Tirumala–Tirupati ghat roads, a critical and high-demand route. The central government has entrusted procurement and supply of these buses to Pinnacle Industries Limited.

In contrast, APSRTC will independently handle the tendering process for the newly proposed 1,450 buses. These will be acquired under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework, wherein private operators will supply and maintain the buses while APSRTC manages operations. This model is expected to reduce upfront capital burden while ensuring operational efficiency.

Officials noted a key design upgrade in the new fleet. While the centrally allocated buses come with a standard width of 8 feet, APSRTC plans to procure buses with an 8.5-foot width, allowing for increased seating capacity and improved passenger comfort, an important factor for high-density routes.

In a parallel development, APSRTC is also preparing to launch electric shuttle services between Visakhapatnam city and the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport. As part of the initial phase, 20 air-conditioned electric buses will be deployed on this route. With the airport expected to commence operations by the end of June, these services aim to provide seamless, eco-friendly connectivity for air travellers. The broader push towards electrification is expected to yield multiple benefits, including reduced fuel costs, lower carbon emissions, and quieter, more efficient urban transport.

It also aligns with the state’s vision to position Andhra Pradesh as a leader in sustainable infrastructure and clean energy adoption. With large-scale procurement underway and infrastructure planning in progress, APSRTC’s electric mobility transition marks a decisive step toward a modern, environmentally responsible public transport system.
