Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) B. Shivadhar Reddy stated on Friday that the state government, in coordination with the Police and Transport departments, has taken up the ‘Arrive Alive’ program as a major social movement with the objective of ensuring that every person travelling on the road reaches home safely. The DGP pointed out the seriousness of the situation by stating that while 800 people lost their lives due to murders in the state last year, as many as 7,500 people died in road accidents.
He informed that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed that road safety is not just the responsibility of the Police and Transport departments alone, but everyone from ward members to the Chief Minister should actively participate in it. The DGP advised that both the bike and the pillion rider must wear quality helmets and use the helmet strap without which, the helmet can fly off during an accident, leading to loss of life.
He also stressed that all passengers travelling in four-wheelers must wear seat belts. Explaining the importance, he said that seat belts ensure air bags deploy properly during an accident and prevent passengers from being thrown out of the vehicle. During the program, the DGP unveiled a sky balloon related to the ‘Arrive Alive’ campaign. He also released posters and the ‘Arrive Alive’ song CD. Helmets were distributed on the occasion.
