Cyber Police arrest accused in digital arrest scam, recover Rs 12 lakh

Cyber Crime police have arrested an accused through a digital arrest operation.  DCP Sai Manohar revealed the details during a press conference on Friday. The arrested accused has been identified as Gajarla Avinash (26).

Police recovered Rs 12 lakh from him. According to the DCP, Avinash and his associates targeted Sadanandam, an elderly man from Balanagar. The accused threatened the senior citizen by claiming that 17 cases were registered against his mobile number and that he would be investigated at his residence. 

Frightened by the continuous threats, the elderly man transferred Rs 42 lakh in instalments to four mule accounts as directed by the accused. As per the police, while staying in Cambodia, Avinash and his associates diverted the victim’s money into mule accounts located in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

During the investigation of this case, the police team visited Visakhapatnam and Mumbai. When information was received that Avinash was returning to India in March, the police arrested him upon his arrival. At the time of arrest, they also seized Rs 12 lakh that he had earned as commission. The DCP stated that the accused is involved in several other cases as well and efforts are on to gather more details.
