The passing away of retired IAS officer Ashok Jha on October 13, 2026, is a profound loss to the civil service fraternity and to all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. An officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, he had an illustrious career in the Indian Administrative Service, marked by administrative acumen, sound judgement and a deep understanding of economic and financial affairs.

He served as Finance Secretary in the Government of Andhra Pradesh and subsequently held several important positions in the Government of India, including Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, and Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs.

He finally rose to the position of Finance Secretary to the Government of India, one of the highest responsibilities in the country's financial administration. What made Ashok Jha particularly endearing was the warmth and simplicity with which he conducted himself. Soft-spoken, ever smiling and easily accessible, he put people at ease and made even the most formal interactions feel personal. Despite the senior positions he held, he remained approachable and courteous, always willing to listen.

His wide experience in financial administration, industrial policy and economic affairs enabled him to contribute to matters of considerable significance for the country's governance and economic progress. A career spanning nearly four decades in public service is a testament to sustained commitment and dedication. His passing leaves a void in the civil service community. He will be remembered with respect for his professional contribution and with affection for the warmth, humility and accessibility that defined his interactions with others.

We, the serving and retired IAS officers of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. May they find strength and solace in their memories of him and in the knowledge that he leaves behind a legacy of service and goodwill.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
