‘Buddhism is not a religion but a Dhamma, a way of life that guides how to live,’ said Dr. Mahesh Deokar, Professor at Pune University, during the Dhamma Vijaya celebrations held at Buddhavanam, Nagarjunasagar, on Tuesday.
The event was chaired by Mallepalli Laxmaiah, Special Officer of Buddhavanam. The celebrations began with floral tributes and salutations at the feet of the Buddha, followed by the lighting of the Buddha Jnana Jyothi inside the Mahasthupam’s meditation hall.
Speaking at the conference, Dr. Deokar stated that the day Emperor Ashoka embraced Buddhism is known as Dhamma Vijaya. On this day, Dr. B R Ambedkar too found deep inspiration in Buddha's teachings and embraced Buddhism. Dr. Deokar emphasized that the Buddhist Dhamma is rooted in equality, brotherhood, and compassion. He highlighted Ashoka’s global propagation of these values through Pali inscriptions and echoed Ambedkar’s view that Dhamma is essential for eradicating inequality and promoting human dignity.
He urged that Buddhavanam become a hub for Buddhist education and suggested setting up a dedicated learning center.
Dr. Altaf Hussain, Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University, echoed this vision, saying Buddhavanam could become a global landmark for peace and knowledge. He promised support for educational initiatives.
Hyderabad Reddy Women's College Secretary Mutyam Reddy stressed the importance of engaging youth with Dhamma. Special Officer Laxmaiah shared ongoing developments, including a digital museum.
Local officials, students, and community members also participated, showing strong support for the initiative.
