CCI to examine IndiGo flight cancellations

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has decided to examine the recent spate of flight cancellations by IndiGo to assess whether competition norms were breached, following widespread disruptions across multiple routes earlier this month.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the fair trade regulator said it has taken cognisance of information filed against the airline in connection with the mass cancellations witnessed in the aviation sector. Based on a preliminary assessment, the Commission has chosen to proceed further under the provisions of the Competition Act, 2002, it said, without disclosing specific details at this stage. IndiGo, which commands more than 65 per cent share of the domestic aviation market, cancelled hundreds of flights beginning December 2, leading to significant inconvenience for thousands of passengers. The cancellations sparked concerns over operational stability at the country’s largest airline and triggered scrutiny from multiple regulatory authorities.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has already launched a probe into the disruptions and has stepped up oversight of IndiGo’s operations. Alongside safety and operational issues, questions have also emerged in some quarters over whether the airline’s dominant market position may have played a role in the scale and impact of the cancellations.

Last week, a senior official had indicated that the CCI was internally assessing whether the airline’s conduct raised competition-related concerns, particularly in light of its market dominance.

Meanwhile, IndiGo chief executive Pieter Elbers has told employees that operations have stabilised after a period of disruption. He said the worst phase was over and that the airline was now focusing on strengthening resilience, conducting a root-cause review and rebuilding systems to prevent a recurrence.
