The Central Government has ruled out implementing Iris camera technology for identifying and safeguarding mentally challenged individuals in Telangana. In the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) confirmed that no such initiative is currently being considered.

The response came after Warangal MP Dr. Kadiyam Kavya raised a query about using Iris based systems to protect vulnerable persons with disabilities, particularly in rural areas, from risks like wandering or exploitation. She also sought information on potential pilot projects and government funding.

Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, B L Verma, clarified that there are no plans to explore or adopt the technology.Expressing disappointment, Dr. Kavya said, ‘This decision ignores urgent needs in regions like Warangal, where such innovations could save lives.’ She emphasized that Iris recognition could be a transformative tool for safety in low resource areas.

A vocal advocate for disability rights, Dr. Kavya pledged to continue pursuing the matter through parliamentary channels and state coordination. Her office is preparing a detailed proposal for upcoming sessions and has called for public support to push for reconsideration. She also cited international success with biometric systems, urging the government to rethink its stance and prioritize inclusive technological solutions.
