A major clean-up drive was carried out at Charminar on Sunday as part of an ongoing 99-day sustainability initiative, highlighting efforts toward environmental protection and heritage conservation.
The initiative, supported by the Government of Telangana, saw active participation from the Department of Tourism and officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). The drive focused on scientific waste collection and management, with support from Green Earth Integrated Systems, an integrated waste management firm.
Officials said around 600 kg of e-waste was collected through targeted drives in the Charminar area, while nearly 400 kg of other waste materials were gathered from multiple collection points. Additionally, about 100 kg of waste was removed during the on-ground clean-up activity at the heritage site. In total, approximately 1,100 kg of waste was collected during the initiative.
The programme witnessed participation from volunteers, local residents, and multiple stakeholders, including tourism officials, Tourist Police personnel, and staff from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Representatives from local establishments also joined the effort.
Authorities said the initiative aims to go beyond one-time drives by promoting long-term behavioural change and encouraging scientific waste management practices. It also seeks to safeguard heritage sites like Charminar from environmental degradation.
The 99-day campaign continues to engage communities and stakeholders, urging collective responsibility in maintaining cleanliness and ensuring a sustainable urban environment for future generations.
