Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Chinta Mohan on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led central government, accusing it of failing to fulfill major promises over the past 11 years and enriching the wealthy at the expense of the poor.
Speaking at a press conference in Hyderabad, Chinta Mohan highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assurances from 2014, including bringing back black money and depositing Rs 15 lakh in every household—promises that remain unfulfilled. He also questioned the government’s claim of generating two crore jobs per year, totalling 22 crore jobs over 11 years. “How many jobs have actually been created? How many in Hyderabad?” he asked, underscoring repeated electoral pledges that BJP has failed to implement.
He sharply criticized the government’s handling of the banking sector, pointing out that Rs 14.5 lakh crore in loans were written off, mainly benefiting wealthy industrialists and super-rich individuals, while small farmers and marginalized communities were left without relief. “This is the largest NPA scandal in the century,” he said, highlighting the scale of corruption in bank loan waivers under BJP rule.
Chinta Mohan also raised concerns about India’s crude oil imports from Russia. Despite cheap imports at Rs 30 per litre, he alleged that the benefits are not reaching the public. “The Modi government is allegedly distributing Russian crude to select friends, who profit Rs 50,000 crore annually,” he claimed, emphasizing the lack of transparency and accountability.
He criticized the Prime Minister’s media and communication approach, noting that in 11 years, Narendra Modi has not held a single press conference. Chinta Mohan also condemned GST hikes and inconsistent economic policies, arguing that these measures have left the poor and unemployed struggling. On media freedom, he claimed that the BJP government has curtailed press independence, likening the situation to “Arundhati Nagara-like suppression.” He also alleged EVM tampering in 2019 and demanded that future elections be conducted through ballot papers.
Addressing Andhra Pradesh-related issues in the context of central governance, Chinta Mohan said state bifurcation has left the people struggling. He cited incomplete projects like Polavaram, a lack of functional secretariat, and widespread infrastructure gaps, contrasting it with Telangana’s progress. He also criticized Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s authoritarian tendencies and called on the central government to take responsibility for resource allocation, urea shortages, and farmer distress in both states.
