CJI Justice Suryakanth emphasizes judicial responsibility

02-03-2026 12:00:00 AM

Chief Justice of India Justice Suryakant on Sunday underscored that the duty of judges to instill public confidence that justice is accessible to everyone who knocks on the doors of the courts. Speaking at the Bhoomi Puja and foundation stone laying for a new district court complex in Daminedu village, Tirupati Rural Mandal, Justice Suryakant said the responsibility to ensure that every person approaching the judiciary receives fair justice lies with all judges.

He was joined by Supreme Court Justices J.K. Maheshwari, P.S. Narasimha, Prashant Kumar Mishra, S.V.N. Bhatti, and Joy Malya Bagchi. The event marked the start of construction on a modern 16-court complex spanning approximately 14.49 acres, with a built-up area of about 2,40,904 square feet. Justice Suryakant likened courts to hospitals, where every visitor—regardless of their ailment—must feel secure and assured of prompt care.

He stressed that courts should function as "temples of justice," ensuring people leave satisfied with fair outcomes. He highlighted the equal role of the bar and bench, describing them as "two hands of the same body," not adversaries.

Mediation in our DNA

Addressing a symposium on meditation here, Justice Kant asserted that mediation is deeply ingrained in India's DNA and has historically been an effective mode of dispute resolution.

“The mediation, all of you know, is something in our DNA… And now mediation in India is not only in the discussion within the halls or within the elite clubs or in the urban areas. Mediation has entered villages. Mediation has entered the streets. Mediation has entered the households where unfortunate disputes are there.”

Highlighting its cultural significance, he referenced Lord Krishna as the first codified mediator who tried to resolve the conflict between the two warring group in Mahabharata. The story where Lord Krishna failed to mediate between the two warring groups conveys a crucial point that prompts introspection and emphasises the importance of mediation.

The temperament, conduct, integrity, and mediation culture of the mediators play a very vital role in the success of the mediation, he opined. Justice Kant mentioned that three things, the trained mediators should keep in mind are that the parties must have trust and faith in the mediator, the second is the faith in the institution where the mediator is appointed and the final one is the enforceability of the mediation terms and conditions once the parties settle down.
