Chronic Kidney Diseases (CKDs) continue to increase at an alarming rate across India. Nephrologists in Hyderabad warn about this growing public health crisis but also stress the awareness about living kidney donation breaking the myths as it has become more necessary than ever. Transplant specialists point out that thousands of patients each year are pushed into lifelong dialysis simply because their families hesitate to consider kidney donations.
However, this hesitation, they say, comes not from the medical risk or danger but from fear, misinformation, and generational myths. Dr. Seerapani Gopaluni Consultant Nephrologist Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills stressed that awareness on the Misconceptions of Kidney Donations is essential now and that chronic kidney disease (CKD) is on rise.
According to him, the most common myths are about the survival with one kidney, explaining that this belief is widespread where people fear that their health may decline or that they may eventually need dialysis themselves. Dr. Gopaluni also noted that the donation process is completely safe. Making it clear that a donor is always the first priority he added that doctors would never proceed if they felt any risk.
Advanced techniques have also made kidney donations far less intimidating. Doctors report that minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures allow donors to walk the same day, get discharged within three to four days, and return to routine activities within two to three weeks. Annual check-ups, however, are necessary to maintain long-term wellbeing. Medical experts also highlight a recurring pattern in CKD’s rise.
