Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to fast-track HD Burley tobacco procurement and adopt a commercial approach to agriculture. At a review meeting on mango, tobacco, and cocoa pricing and procurement, he stressed supporting farmers amid current challenges.

Officials reported 80 million kg of HD Burley tobacco was produced this year, with only 27 million kg sold. Naidu ordered swift procurement of the remaining 53 million kg and clear communication with farmers about procurement centres.

He emphasized using technology for real-time crop tracking and transparent procurement. Advanced grading systems were also urged to boost exports and improve prices for quality produce. On mangoes, the CM noted talks with the Centre to reduce palm oil import duties and cut GST on mango pulp from 12% to 5% to benefit growers. The government is offering a Rs.4/kg support price, with units instructed not to pay less than Rs.8/kg. He urged better market awareness for farmers.

For cocoa, with 12,000 metric tonnes produced and 10,000 sold, the CM asked that the remaining stock be procured by early July. Naidu also called for an action plan to set up more fruit processing units to add value, cut wastage, and boost exports. “Agriculture must be viewed commercially to ensure better incomes for farmers,” he said.
