Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Tuesday held a series of high-level meetings with Union Ministers to seek the Centre’s support for the state’s ambitious education sector reforms, with a strong focus on inclusive, quality education and long-term human capital development.
In a meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at her Parliament House chamber, the Chief Minister outlined the Telangana government’s large-scale investments aimed at improving access to quality education for students from BC, SC, ST and minority communities. He emphasized that education spending should be viewed as an investment in human resources rather than routine expenditure.
The Chief Minister highlighted the flagship Young India Integrated Residential Schools (YIIRS) initiative, under which 105 integrated residential schools are being constructed across all Assembly constituencies. Each school, catering to Classes 5 to 12, will accommodate around 2,560 students, directly benefiting nearly 2.7 lakh students. He noted that these schools would also function as academic hubs for nearby government schools, indirectly benefiting several lakh more students.
He informed the Finance Minister that Rs 21,000 crore is being spent on constructing these 105 YIIRS campuses with state-of-the-art infrastructure, including modern classrooms, laboratories and sports facilities. In addition, another Rs 9,000 crore is being allocated for upgrading laboratories and infrastructure in junior colleges, degree colleges, technical institutions and other higher education establishments. Overall, Telangana is investing nearly Rs 30,000 crore in the education sector.
To mobilize resources, the state plans to set up a Special Purpose Company and raise loans through it. The Chief Minister requested that loans raised for education development be exempted from FRBM limits. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman appreciated the Chief Minister’s focus on education, described the YIIRS model as promising, and asked officials to share detailed information regarding the proposed Special Purpose Company.
CM meets Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan
Earlier, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy met Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and requested the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Hyderabad. The Chief Minister stated that 200 acres of land have been identified within the University of Hyderabad campus and that a transit campus is ready to start academic operations immediately. He assured full state support in terms of land, approvals and infrastructure, noting Hyderabad’s excellent air, rail and road connectivity and its conducive academic and industrial ecosystem.
Additionally, the Chief Minister urged the Centre to sanction nine new Kendriya Vidyalayas and sixteen Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in line with Telangana’s increased number of districts, to meet the growing demand for quality education in urban and rural areas. He assured that the state government would provide land and all necessary facilities for these institutions.
