Cochin International Airport (CIAL) on Tuesday inaugurated its expanded export cargo warehouse, raising its annual handling capacity from 75,000 metric tonnes to 1.25 lakh metric tonnes.

The upgraded facility is equipped with advanced security and operational features, including two additional X-ray machines, explosive trace detection systems, a dedicated dangerous goods room, two cold rooms, a radioactive cargo room, and a valuables room. These upgrades aim to enhance safety, security, and efficiency in cargo operations.

The inauguration was led by CIAL Managing Director S Suhas, IAS, with officials including E Vikas, Deputy Commissioner of Customs; Satheesh Kumar Pai, General Manager and Head–Cargo; Manu G, Airport Director; and other senior departmental heads in attendance.

Speaking at the event, Suhas highlighted that the expanded warehouse would significantly benefit exporters by improving turnaround times, strengthening cold-chain support, and enabling efficient handling of specialized cargo. He added that the project underscores CIAL’s commitment to continually upgrading infrastructure to meet evolving trade and logistics demands.

With the expansion, CIAL is now equipped to handle a wide variety of export cargo, including perishables, pharmaceuticals, dangerous goods, radioactive materials, and high-value consignments, offering reliable and secure services to exporters.

This development positions Cochin Airport as a stronger hub for international trade, supporting the growth of Kerala’s export sector.
