Divers find 162-yr-old Guinness in shipwreck off English coast

London: Belgian underwater photographer Stefan Panis has recovered a 162-year-old bottle of Guinness from a shipwreck off the coast of Dover. Panis discovered the bottle buried in the wreck in 2025 while diving with his friend Eddie Huzzey. After surfacing, they rinsed it and discovered the Guinness branding. The bottle dates to 1864.

Panis, who has been diving for over 40 years, believes more bottles remain buried around the wreck, BBC reported. Samples have been sent for analysis, with researchers hoping to determine what the stout tasted like and whether its DNA can be recovered. He said research­ers could potentially recreate the 1864 beer. The Guinness could still be drinkable if seawater had not entered through the cork. Diageo said its Guinness Archive team was evaluating the find.
