European films in the Oscars race

With the 99th Academy Awards ceremony scheduled to take place in Hollywood on 14 March 2027, European countries are starting to reveal their titles submitted for the Best International Feature Film Award.

The deadline for submissions for this edition is 12 November. The finalists will be selected from the total number of submissions and announced on 15 December, before the Academy whittles that number down, announcing the final nominees on 21 January 2027 alongside the nominees for the rest of the categories. This year's novelty is the change in the rules to the submission process, allowing non-English-language films to be submitted if they win the top award at the following international film festivals: Berlinale (Golden Bear), Busan (Best Film Award), Cannes (Palme d'Or), Sundance (World Cinema Grand Jury Prize), Toronto (Platform Prize) and Venice (Golden Lion).
