Shalibanda police have registered an extortion case against Mohammed Bilal, who allegedly projected himself as a YouTube reporter and threatened people by misusing the name of the police, officials said.
According to the complaint, the accused demanded Rs 35,000 from a party, claiming he could “manage” their case at the police station and ensure they would not be arrested. He allegedly warned that if the amount was not paid, he would get them arrested. The complainant stated that Bilal intimidated them on several occasions with similar threats, creating fear and pressure to extract money.
Based on the complaint and available evidence, police registered a case and arrested the accused. Investigations are underway to ascertain whether he was involved in similar acts and to identify other possible victims.
DCP South Zone Kiran Khare, IPS, said police have observed that some individuals are falsely posing as reporters or media persons to indulge in illegal activities such as case settlements, extortion, and collection of “mamool.” He made it clear that such activities will not be tolerated under any circumstances and that strict legal action will be taken against those involved.
The DCP appealed to the public not to fall prey to false claims of influence or media identity.
