Washington: Former FBI director James Comey has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly threatening US President Donald Trump. The indictment, returned in the Eastern District of North Carolina, charges Comey with “knowingly and willfully” making a threat to take the life of and inflict bodily harm upon the president on May 15, 2025.

The case centres on an Instagram post featuring seashells arranged as “86 47”, which prosecutors argue represents a serious intent to harm the president. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the indictment followed a year-long probe, emphasising anyone threatening the president would be held accountable.

FBI Director Kash Patel said investigators followed standard procedures and noted Comey deleted the post and issued an apology.

US Attorney Ellis Boyle affirmed federal law applies to everyone regardless of their status.

Comey is charged under federal statutes criminalising threats against the president and faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Officials declined to discuss specific evidence, but Blanche said intent would be proven through witnesses and documents.  –IANS
