Italy’s PM Giorgia Meloni is grappling with political instability following a failed referendum and weakening relations with the US.
Amid this, Genoa Mayor Silvia Salis (L)has emerged as a fresh progressive force. Salis, a former Olympic hammer thrower, recently gained national prominence after hosting a massive free techno event for 20,000 people. This move served as a deliberate cultural alternative to the PM’s “anti-rave” decree.
Salis, 40, ended nearly a decade of right-wing governance in Genoa less than a year ago. Her non-partisan background makes her a compelling figure for a national Opposition currently struggling under leaders like Elly Schlein and Giuseppe Conte. Analysts view Salis as a unique bridge between centrist and left-wing forces, aided by her “youthful energy” and sporting background.
Though she remains dedicated to her role in Genoa, Salis has not ruled out a larger role on the national stage. Referring to the 2027 election, she said she would consider a unifying request to lead a challenge against the current government. As Meloni’s credibility wavers in Rome, the rise of Salis suggests a shifting tide in Italian politics, moving from the historic maritime republic to the national capital.
