Washington: Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has sparked “disarray” inside the Pentagon by firing or forcibly retiring 24 senior military commanders since January 2025, The Guardian reported.
The wave of removals, which includes prominent figures like Generals CQ Brown and Randy George, has targeted a high percentage of Black and female officers. Insiders suggest the purge is driven by an onslaught against “woke” military leadership and follows the radical Project 2025 blueprint.
The mass ousters have raised fears about the breakdown of the civilian-military relationship. Retired Major-General Paul Eaton likened the situation to Stalin’s purges, warning it creates an environment where leaders are afraid to speak truth to power. This instability is particularly concerning given President Donald Trump’s aggressive rhetoric regarding Iran and his reported discussions about nuclear weapons.
Further misgivings surround Hegseth’s inner circle, which includes relatives and close friends, while the day-to-day operations are overseen by billionaire Steve Feinberg. Critics worry the new leadership lacks the authority or willingness to restrain impulsive presidential whims, a role previously played by figures like Gen Mark Milley. As the chain of command becomes more “ideologically pure”, analysts warn the unfettered authority of the president to launch nuclear strikes now lacks an adequate internal barrier.
