Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Friday dismissed a petition filed challenging the appointment of Director General of Police (DGP) B. Shivadhar Reddy, granting him major relief. The division bench refused to suspend his appointment after hearing arguments from both sides. While dismissing the plea, the High Court directed the State government to complete the regular appointment process through the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) within four weeks.
The court also instructed the government to file a counter-affidavit after forwarding the proposal to the UPSC and posted the next hearing for February 5. The petition was filed by social activist T. Dhangopal, who contended that the appointment violated the Supreme Court’s guidelines laid down in the Prakash Singh case. Advocate General A. Sudarshan Reddy informed the court that a fresh panel of names had been sent to the UPSC on December 31, as per earlier High Court directions.
He recalled that while the UPSC had earlier returned the list citing delay, none of its previous communications mentioned any such delay. Appearing for the UPSC, counsel Kulkarni argued that the list was sent after seven years and was therefore returned. After considering submissions from all parties, Justice Pulla Karthik dismissed the petition.
