Russia and Ukraine launched air attacks that damaged each other's infrastructure overnight, hours after Vladimir Putin rejected US President Donald Trump's proposal for a full 30-day ceasefire.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported extensive damage to Ukraine's energy infrastructure, contradicting claims of restraint. He specifically cited attacks on 11 Ukrainian regions, including a hospital in Sumy.
Zelenskyy condemned the ongoing Russian strikes, emphasizing their disruption of civilian life and energy systems. “It’s nightly Russian attacks like this [that] ruin our energy system, our infrastructure, Ukraine’s normal life. The fact that this night is no exception shows that pressure on Russia needs to continue for the sake of peace,” he said.
“This confirms that we must continue to pressure Russia for the sake of peace,” he said Tuesday night. “Only a real halt to Russia’s attacks on civilian infrastructure can signal a genuine desire to end this war and bring peace closer.” He asserted that these attacks demonstrate the necessity for sustained international pressure on Russia to achieve peace.
Referring to the Trump-Putin telephone conversation, Zelensky said: “Today, Putin essentially rejected the proposal of a comprehensive ceasefire. It would be right for the world to reject any attempts by Putin to draw out the war.”
He called for global opposition to any attempts by Putin to prolong the conflict. The Ukrainian President urged allies to intensify their support through continued military assistance and reinforced sanctions against Russia. He stated that only a complete cessation of Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure would indicate a genuine commitment to peace.
Following a lengthy phone call between Trump and Putin, air raid sirens sounded in Kyiv, followed by explosions. Despite Ukrainian defense efforts, Russian strikes targeted civilian infrastructure, including a hospital in Sumy and cities within the Donetsk region. Russian drones were also reported over multiple Ukrainian regions, including Kyiv, Zhytomyr, and Kharkiv.
The Russian Defence Ministry reported intercepting 57 Ukrainian drones over the Azov Sea and several Russian regions, including Kursk, Bryansk, Oryol, and Tula. Authorities in the Krasnodar region, bordering Crimea, reported a drone attack that ignited a fire at an oil depot.
Zelenskyy expressed his intention to contact Trump to discuss the details of his conversation with Putin. Regarding peace talks, Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine's essential role, stating that "the next steps cannot be done without us." He referenced a productive meeting in Jeddah, acknowledging progress while criticizing Russia's obstructive efforts. He plans to discuss further steps with Trump, aiming to gain insights into his conversation with Putin.
